The only thing that makes cleaning a piano easier is to have a pro do it

I am always amazed how dusty and dirty a piano can get between tunings.  As part of my MINOR REPAIR service, and with the help of the piano owner, I will do a light cleaning before or after a Precision Tuning.  But, eventually, your piano will need a thorough cleaning – inside and out.  Dust and dirt eventually works its way into the action and other working mechanisms of the piano and can lead to premature wear of many parts and pieces.  Dust – over time – can cause considerable damage to a piano action.  In schools and churches I often find rodent and bug damage – a piano issue and a health issue.

The cleaning process is slightly different for vertical uprights, consoles and spinets then it is for horizontal grands.

Vertical piano cleaning

  • Remove the bottom board and vacuum around the pedals

  • Vacuum all around the plate and especially around the tuning pins

  • Vacuum or blow off dirt from the tops and sides of bridges

Horizontal (Grand) piano cleaning

  • Vacuum around the pedals

  • Vacuum all around the plate and especially around the tuning pins

  • Vacuum or blow off dirt from the tops and of bridges

  • Vacuum the tops of dampers

  • Using special tools and a microfiber cloth remove as much dust and grime from the soundboard as possible
